Alexander Rae Baldwin III was born on April 3, 1958, in Long Island, New York. Alec grew up in a large family, with five siblings, of which he was the second eldest. Baldwin attended George Washington University as a political science major and had plans to go to law school, when a friend suggested for him to return to his childhood love of acting. In 1979, Baldwin transferred to New York University, and entered their acting program. Before Alec could even finish school, he was cast onto the NBC television show, "The Doctors", which would prove to be the starting of his brilliant professional acting career.
After approximately 2.5 years with "The Doctors", Baldwin decided it was time to move on, and moved to Los Angeles, where he was quickly offered prominent roles in "Cutter to Houston" and "Knots Landing". Despite the early success in television, Baldwin still desired to go back to New York, and focus more on theatre. Baldwin starred in several plays on Broadway in between his various movie shoots, but found most of his time occupied with movies. In this time, he starred in "Forever Lulu", "She's Having a Baby", "Beetlejuice", "Married to the Mob", "Talk Radio", "Working Girl", and "Great Balls of Fire!". Baldwin made his debut on Broadway in 1986 with the comedy, "Loot", with which he won the Theatre World Award in 1986. He continued acting on Broadway for the next six years, winning the 1991 Obie Award as Best Actor, and nominated for the 1992 Tony Award, which is for the best actor in theatre.
In 1989, the movie directors recruited him back to film, as he starred as CIA Agent, Jack Ryan, in "A Hunt for Red October", which turned out to be a huge success. However, when asked to make several other movies based on the Tom Clancy novels, Baldwin declined, and returned to Broadway. In 1990, Alec Baldwin met actress Kim Basinger, and instantly fell in love. The couple was married in August, 1993. In 1993, Baldwin also returned to New York University to complete his degree, and received a BFA degree in drama. Alec and Kim had their first child in 1995, Eliesse Ireland Baldwin.
In January, 2001, Kim filed for divorce, having been separated from Alec, since December, 2000. The divorce ended up being quite messy, but was eventually settled, with Kim having custody of their daughter. Also, in 2001 Baldwin made his debut as a director, with "The Devil and Daniel Webster".
Baldwin is now considered a box office regular by critics, and is widely recognized by fans. He should remain busy for the next many many years of his career. The only question now is if he wishes to stick with film, where he has been very successful, or focus on theatre, where his heart wants to be. |
